Victory Gardens

03 28th, 2009I don’t know if it is that I am now semi-retired and have more time on my hands or it may be that we could really be in another Great Depression, but I am planting a Victory Garden this year.
Victory Gardens were popular in both World War I and II and were grown in the US, Germany, Britain and Canada by everyday people to increase the food supply and to boost morale and enjoying the produce. Victory Gardens were to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs.
I live in the suburbs so I elected the square foot garden type that is built above ground in 4 feet by 4 feet plots. Then you add your soil mixture. It is very efficient. I got a used copy of the book by Mel Bartholomew on Ebay and it is an excellent reference for everything you need.
Also I purchased the heirloom seeds in the Victory Garden package via mail order. Heirloom seeds are non hybrids and are support to have good tasting produce like in the good old days before corporate farming.
The Victory Garden of today is fun and a small way to take control by growing your own.
Hang a Banker

03 28th, 2009The press is reporting some G20 protesters in London have adopted slogans such as “Hang a Banker” and “Storm the Banks,” organizers of the London march said they wanted a peaceful day.
I say a good way of personal protest is to switch over your account to a local credit union. Most credit unions did not and no not do investment banking and shaky loans. Mostly they loan only to their local members. Credit unions also pay higher interest rates on money markets and CDs. Keep your money working locally, do not give it to a New York Bankster.
Of coarse always check out the rating of any credit union before opening an account and keep your money under the insured amounts, currently $250,000 per account. Once you have your accounts in the credit union or credit unions, then take your money out of the bank.
